Given the current political environment at least in the United Statesit seems like many of us could stand to sharpen our critical thinking skills a bit. And for the average lifelong learner, of course, good critical thinking skills are essential for cutting through the noise created by the Web and other media channels and getting to resources that are actually trustworthy and accurate. So here are various resources I found valuable as I have searched for tools to help with sharpening my critical thinking skills.
I hope you find them useful, too — and please comment with any others you think are valuable. I recommend starting things off with a quick test before heading into the other resources which are ordered uncritically :.
OpenCourseWare on critical thinking, logic, and creativity. This one is also available in traditional and simplified Chinese. A key reason to embrace critical thinking is that it helps you to be a better citizen — of your community, of your country, and of the world. This is a helpful infographic from the Global Digital Citizen Foundation also included below nicely sums up some of the most important skills.
I also recommend downloading their Critical Thinking Workbook. His style of argument was to assume, provisionally, the position of the opponent, and then to derive impossible conclusions from it, thus establishing the absurdity of the assumption.
I particularly like the Fallacy Watch section. This tutorial from Humboldt State University provides a brief review of major critical thinking concepts and then a set of quizzes to test your understanding. Warning: Turn down your volume if you are using this in a public place.
Answers are punctuated with Simpson- like sounds which personally I find a bit annoying. If you find you are a true skeptic after checking out the resources above, you may also want to visit the Skeptics Dictionary and the Skeptic Society.
Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. I am a former teacher and started the above mention website for promoting critical thinking, please visit and send me your comments. Some of these would be really fun staff or board exercises.
Nile — A belated response to say thanks for that addition. I somehow did not come across The Critical Thinking Co. Looks like a valuable site. For more than 50 years, their award-winning products have helped students of all ages and abilities achieve better grades and higher test scores with highly effective lessons that sharpen the mind as they teach standards-based reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history.Best creative essay editor services

You should also inform your decision with the potential differences in prediction costs. If you use a simple model and a small set of input instances, you'll find that there is a considerable difference between how long it takes to finish identical prediction requests using online versus batch prediction. It might take a batch job several minutes to complete predictions that are returned almost instantly by an online request. This is a side-effect of the different infrastructure used by the two methods of prediction.
Cloud ML Engine allocates and initializes resources for a batch prediction job when you send the request. Online prediction is typically ready to process at the time of request. Cloud ML Engine measures the amount of processing you consume for prediction in node hours.
This section describes these nodes and how they are allocated for the different types of prediction. It's easiest to think of a node as a virtual machine (VM), even though they are implemented with a different mechanism than a traditional VM. Each node is provisioned with a set amount of processing power and memory.
It also has an operating system image and a set configuration of software needed to run your model to get predictions. Both online and batch prediction run your node with distributed processing, so a given request or job can use multiple nodes simultaneously. You are charged for total node usage by the minute, using an hourly rate. For example, running two nodes for ten minutes is charged the same as running one node for twenty minutes.
Online and batch prediction allocate nodes differently, which can have a substantial effect on what you will be charged. The batch prediction service scales the number of nodes it uses to minimize the amount of elapsed time your job takes.
To do that, the service:Scales the number of nodes during the job in an attempt to optimize efficiency. Each node takes time to get started, so the service tries to allocate just enough of them so that the startup time is countered by the reduction in elapsed time. You can affect the scaling of a batch prediction job by specifying a maximum number of nodes to use.
You generally want as many nodes as the service will use, but node usage is subject to the Cloud ML Engine quota policy.Smart cooking devices
You may want to limit the number of nodes allocated to a given job, especially if you share your project with others and potentially run jobs (both training and prediction) concurrently. The online prediction service scales the number of nodes it uses to maximize the number of requests it can handle without introducing too much latency. To do that, the service:Scales the number of nodes in response to request traffic, adding nodes when traffic increases, and removing them when there are fewer requests.
Keeps at least one node ready to handle requests even when there are none to handle. It scales down to zero when your model version goes several minutes without a prediction request.
The service keeps your model in a ready state as long as you have a steady stream of requests. In this way each prediction can be served promptly. However, it can take a long timetens of seconds, maybe as much as a few minutesto initialize nodes to serve a request when the service has scaled down to zero. It's not just about which football team has won their last six games but how well they have really played offensively and defensively. Were they good at keeping possession or were they lucky.
Which tennis player is having a spat with their coach. That golfer might have won two majors this season but how much experience does he have on a links course. These are the kinds of details that will inform your betting and will better prepare you for spotting those good-value markets. This seems obvious to point out but it is difficult for any punter to ignore the price bookies have given. When Rafael Nadal took on Fabio Fognini at the Barcelona Open back in April, bookmakers had Nadal as the heavy favourite.
On the surface this would make sense. Nadal is the King of Clay and has won this very tournament a record-breaking eight times. What the bookmakers had overlooked was that Fognini had beaten Nadal on clay only a few months earlier in Rio De Janeiro. There is a big emphasis on brand loyalty in the betting business. Because it's such a competitive sector, companies will try and lure you to bet with them and only them.
Whether this is through various loyalty schemes or special in-shop offers, the intention is the same. Don't let them make you think you shouldn't shop around. Check the offers available for specific bets. The first goalscorer market is one of the most popular bets in football and as a result, bookies all have their own spin on it. Betfred will double the odds if your player scores twice and treble the odds if he scores a third time.
Ladbrokes, on the other hand, will double the odds if he scores within 25 minutes and you will probably find that most other bookies have their own version to try and get you through their doors instead of someone else's.
Your research should tell you which of these offers will most suit you for any given match. Be flexible and be prepared to put in the leg work. This is something that, even though it seems like common sense, punters forget all the time. The fewer selections you include in your bet, the more chance you stand of winning. If you're betting to make money think small, not big.
One team or selection if you can stake enough. Three or four maximum. Once you find yourself putting that 20-fold accumulator on, you really are on cloud cuckoo land. Bookies lose most of their money from singles.Thank you John, United Kingdom Iceland Full Circle, November 2012 Nordic Visitor were very helpful during the duration of the whole tour.

These seven tips can keep your strength training safe and effective.Slab stock quote history value
Warm up and cool down for five to 10 minutes. Focus on form, not weight. Align your body correctly and move smoothly through each exercise. Poor form can prompt injuries and slow gains. When learning a strength training routine, many experts suggest starting with no weight, or very light weight. Concentrate on slow, smooth lifts and equally controlled descents while isolating a muscle group. Working at the right tempo helps you stay in control rather than compromise strength gains through momentum.
For example, count to three while lowering a weight, hold, then count to three while raising it to the starting position. Pay attention to your breathing during your workouts. Keep challenging muscles by slowly increasing weight or resistance. The right weight for you differs depending on the exercise. Choose a weight that tires the targeted muscle or muscles by the last two repetitions while still allowing you to maintain good form. If you can't do the last two reps, choose a lighter weight.
When it feels too easy to complete add weight (roughly 1 to 2 pounds for arms, 2 to 5 pounds for legs), or add another set of repetitions to your workout (up to three sets). If you add weight, remember that you should be able to do all the repetitions with good form and the targeted muscles should feel tired by the last two.
Stick with your routine working all the major muscles of your body two or three times a week is ideal. You can choose to do one full-body strength workout two or three times a week, or you may break your strength workout into upper- and lower-body components. In that case, be sure you perform each component two or three times a week. Give muscles time off. Strength training causes tiny tears in muscle tissue. These tears aren't harmful, but they are important: muscles grow stronger as the tears knit up.
Always give your muscles at least 48 hours to recover before your next strength training session. Easy exercises for couch potatoes Improve your balance by strengthening your core Daily Health Tip Build muscle strength Building muscle isn't just for individuals into fitness as a hobby.
